AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable 2 Plus – Review and Impression

With the release of the Xbox One X and the Playstation 4 Pro, they are certainly paving the path for a 4K world. However, in the streaming world that path is paved with some trials, tribulations, and quality sacrifices. The streaming and capturing hardware standards aren’t equipped to support Ultra HD 4K resolution. If you tried you’ll be met with errors, bad video, or just no video at all. Leaving users to sacrifice video quality by dropping down to 1080p. Surely, you didn’t get yourself a 4K console and TV just to play at 1080p. Thanks to AVerMedia, they stepped up to the plate and created a product to fill that need.

The Live Gamer Portable 2 Plus is AVerMedia’s latest product in their compact capture card line up. The LGP2 Plus remains true to its predecessors being able to still capture gameplay with or without a PC. This external capture device is an update to the previous LPG2. What’s the biggest change? The “Plus.” The Plus indicates that it can now support 4K passthrough, making it possible for gamers to enjoy 4K resolution and stream at 1080p60. AVerMedia offers this at a competitive price of $199.99.

The Good
It’s 4K ready right out of the box. This device is truly plug and play, there is no need to install any drivers. Just hook it up and go. It is a 4K passthrough device, giving you the ability to play in full UHD while recording or streaming at 1080p and 60 frames per second.

Similar to the previous revisions, the Live Gamer Portable 2 Plus is also capable of capturing and recording gameplay without the need of a PC. With a large enough microSD card (not included with the device) and a USB power source the LGP2Plus is the perfect device on the go. Whether gaming at a friend’s house or attending events you can record footage on the fly with little to no hassle. However, the LGP2Plus isn’t the only device with on the go capabilities. We’ll start to see those other products become obsolete as events start to use the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X to demo their games at 4K. The LGP2Plus will be ahead of the standard with the 4K passthrough giving you the ability to record worry free.

Audio and the ease of handling audio has been simplified too. The LGP2Plus has eliminated the need for unnecessary splitters and multiple microphones. Users simply plug-in both audio sources, easy as that. Volume control and monitoring can be controlled on the device itself and on the RECentral software. Recording your live commentary and party chats have never been easier.

The Bad
It’s 2017 AVerMedia, why USB 2.0? The AVerMedia Live Gamer Extreme utilizes USB 3.0. I’d like to know the deciding factor to not have USB 3.0 be available on the LGP2Plus too. With 3.0 there is virtually no delay. When using the LGP2Plus the delay is there. Although it may be noticeable for those really focusing and looking for it. This does cause some desyncing issues if utilizing microphone input and video. You can always fix that through other software and delay inputs, but that’s one extra step that really shouldn’t be necessary.

The Ugly
Although still small enough to throw into your bag, the design of the Live Gamer Portable 2 Plus isn’t very sleek. As an owner of the original Live Gamer Portable, I loved the size and form. It felt good and could slip into my pocket nicely. The LGP2 Plus is shaped like and slightly bigger than a Toblerone chocolate bar. Still compact enough to fit on your desk or entertainment unit without taking up much space. Although the triangular shape doesn’t blend as well with an almost rectangular set of devices.

I can easily recommend this to anyone looking to upgrade or getting into game capturing and streaming for the first time. With its competitive pricing and 4K passthrough capabilities AverMedia is definitely ahead of the game compared to their competitors. Even if users don’t take advantage of 4K resolutions, the LGP2Plus still provides seamless 1080p60 recording and streaming. It’s portable capabilities makes it the most viable option. Although 4K recording and streaming at this price point may be a long ways off, the AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable 2 Plus will last you a while and through future upgrades.
