If you follow me for any length of time then you know that my podcast journey started with Blog talk Radio. One of my High School classmates had a show on it and recommended it to me and I am forever grateful for that. But looking back, after recording 113 episodes on the platform, If I had to do it over, I would of never picked that platform for The Show Radio Media. So what are the reasons? First reason that I want to touch on is that it doesn't promote branding. Blog talk radio promotes its brand and rightfully so but if you are trying to create your own branding using their service then you are doing yourself a disservice. Here's a newsflash, Blog talk radio has tools for promotion but their promotion for their brand will always trump yours. I hope you understand that. I'm writing this simply to raise your awareness. I'm always up for that. Their site is crowded with ads (lots of them) and you should ask yourself this question, is that really where you want to start your podcasting journey?
Think about this, I thought I was doing myself some good by going with their cookie cutter platform but in the long run, it sorta made me lazy. I was depending of them for a lot of things and I noticed that my creative effort meter was going lower and lower. Still reading?
The second and last thing that you should be aware of is that when you leave (if you leave) their service, you cannot take that RSS feed you created with them with you to another service. They won't tell you that but that is the deal. When I left their service to go to libsyn, I had to recreate my feed from scratch losing some listeners and gaining some in the transition. If you notice my libsyn feed starts at 114 and on, if you wondered.
The fact of the matter is that they don't want you to leave but if you do, it will be painful. So what does this mean? Well, this means that if you read this, you now have information that you didn't have or bargain for. My responsibility is to add value to you wherever I can, through the podcast and hopefully through my experiences. My hope is that you investigate it for yourself and see what you come up with. I hope I'm wrong and you're right but understand this, I'm speaking from experience and what you decide to do with this information is up to you.
